Jan Krtitel Boháč

Bohemian naturalist, doctor and zoologist

Bohadsch spent his early education at a Jesuit seminary where he studied Latin and philosophy.  In 1741, he began his medical studies in Prague at Carolina Medicin, known today as Carolina University.

Bohadsch concluded his first cycle of studies in 1746 after embarking on a journey that led him to visit several European universities. After reaching Venice, with a reference letter from Giovanni Battista Morgagni, he passed through Padua. He travelled through Bologna, Rome and Naples, he settled in Montpellier and Paris for a short period before move in to Holland, Belgium, and London. In 1750, he returned to Prague. In 1751, he obtained the title of doctor of medicine and in 1752, he was assigned the chair of natural sciences and Dean of the Prague Faculty. Bohadsch is considered one of the most influential zoologists and naturalists of his era.

In Bohemia, Bohadsh introduced the cultivation of madder (Rubia tinctorum, used as a vegetable red dye for leather, and woad (Isatis tinctoria, the extracted dye chemical producing indigo dye).
