Plans to redesign and renovate the former Piave military barracks as an additional university campus dedicated to young people and citizens of Padua focuses on creating an area explored on foot or by bicycle. The location housed several institutions over the centuries, at first the Church of Sant’Agostino with an attached Dominican Convent and later an Austro-Hungarian military settlement.
Architect David Chipperfield is the winner of the international competition launched by the University to renovate the existing building, the new project takes the historic 51,000 square-metered building and creates a fluid area set in harmony with vast green spaces.
The project is a successful collaboration between public institutions: Italian Ministry of Defense, the Agency of State-Owned Property, the Municipality of Padua, and the University. Housing the campuses of Economic, Political Sciences and Sociology Schools of Social Sciences, Piave Futura will incorporate an area dedicated to Cultural Heritage laboratories.
