SCHOLARES VAGANTES

CYCLING ACROSS EUROPE WITH THE OLDEST UNIVERSITIES

In order to celebrate its 800 years of history, the University of Padua organises a cycling relay through the oldest universities in Europe, as memory of the medieval scholares vagantes who crossed borders in search of a common culture, as well as a reference to modern international students’ mobility. The relay started on April 21, 2022, from Okford, Uk.

A route and a European experience to be given as inheritance to future generations, in the name of the founding values of the University and as a collective thought over the future waiting for us. An active message dealing with sustainability and promoting values of sport, health, wellness, mobility and international collaboration.

The University of Padua crosses, with traditional bikes and its nine cycling teams, four countries: Great Britain, France, Spain and finally Italy, involving six of the ancient Universities in Europe (Oxford, Cambridge, Paris Sorbonne, Salamanca, Bologna e Padua).

Universities involved in the project:

  • University of Oxford
  • University of Cambridge
  • Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne
  • Universidad de Salamanca
  • Alma Mater Studiorum Università di Bologna
  • Università degli Studi di Padova

Nine cycling teams from the University of Padua cover the entire relay, one every week and they are composed by professors, personnel and students, therefore 36 people are involved.

The cycling relay is scheduled to arrive in Padua on 18 June 2022. A total of 4,475 km are covered, 75 km per day on average, 60 days of travel.
