The coin that celebrates eight centuries of the University of Padua

As part of the 2022 Italian Numismatic Collection, the Ministry of Economy and Finance with the State Mint and Polygraphic Institute present a new 5-euro silver coin that celebrates eight centuries of the University of Padua. Struck with a highly polished Proof finish, the limited-edition commemorative coin is intended to be enjoyed by collectors, institutions, associations, and enthusiasts.

Designed and created by Italian sculptor, medallist, and artist Uliana Pernazza, the Ottocentenario dell’Università di Padova coin represents 800 years of history by uniting the symbols of the past and the values that define the University of Padua.

Within the background of the obverse side, the entrance to historical Palazzo Bo is engraved along with the handrail leading up to the Scala del Sapere and a fresco by Giò Ponti illustrating the path students take toward the Alma Mater with the University’s motto Universa Universis Patavina Libertas admired from above. Pernazza includes her signature and Repubblica Italiana on this side of the coin.

The reverse side displays the University’s insignia highlighted by a stylized image of the historic Anatomical Theatre and the dates 1222-2022 representing the founding year of the University of Padua and the issuing year of the commemorative coin.  The letter “R” identifying the Mint of Rome and its 5-euro value is inscribed along the exergue, which divides the space beneath the central design.

The coin can be purchased from the website of the Polygraphic Institute and State Mint, starting from 1 February 2022.
