Slide on heart Hand

In the night between 13 and 14 November 1985, a heart stops. No pulse. Time is suspended, dilating from moments to hours, then it starts flowing again. Heart surgeon and University of Padua professor Vincenzo Gallucci performs the first ever heart transplant in Italy. At 6am the heart of a young man who has just died starts beating again in the chest of another man at Padua University Hospital. The operation takes place according to a strict procedure. Instants are so intense they seem endless.

Waiting for Gallucci outside the operating theatre is all of Italy. Thanks to that heart donation, the surgeon saves the life of a patient suffering from a severe form of dilated cardiomyopathy. It is a deeply emotional time for the whole country. On this autumn night, many patients have been given back their hope.

Knowledge is freedom.
