Giovanni Battista Morgagni. The Birth of Modern Medicine

Known as the father of modern anatomical pathology, Giovanni Battista Morgagni (1682-1771) is a crucial figure in the development of modern medicine who embodies the struggles of a period of great transition. Both a figure of the previous period, Morgagni’s work opened up new horizons that developed over the next two centuries. His method merged centuries-old traditions of medical anatomy that focused on researching the causes of diseases by investigating specific locations on the body. Morgagni contributed by inserting the medical applications of physics known as iatromechanics introduced by his predecessor Marcello Malpighi. At the same time, he knew how to reconcile the epistemological debate that raged between the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries that challenged empirical medicine and rational medicine.
