The Centre for the History of the University of Padua (CSUP) presents a volume by Chiara Valsecchi entitled “Zabarella. Da Padova all’Europa per salvare la Chiesa” (Francesco Zabarella, saving the Church from Padua to Europe) published in Milan by Franco Angelli 2021, as part of the CSUP Clarissimi book series.
The book presentation brings together author Chiara Valsecchi with Marta Nezzo (Director at the Centre for the History of the University of Padua) and Matteo Melchiorre (Director of the Library, the Museum Giorgione and the Historical Archives of Castelfranco Veneto).
A jurist, a man of the cloth, and a cultured intellectual, Francesco Zabarella was this and much more. It is surprising to think that Zabarella remained almost unheard of yet was at the centre of many historical events. His life, full of acts and works, took place during a very delicate and complex period in history between the second half of the 14th century and the early years of the 15th century. At this time, Italy and the rest of Europe had been divided into minor and intense political situations of eternal conflict. After 40 years of struggle, Zabarella’s greatest contribution was to bring forth a shared solution to the Great Schism that split the main faction of Christianity into two divisions, Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox. Nevertheless, the role of this man was equally important for the history of Padua and its university, as he dedicated 20 years to teaching and training a new generation of jurists.
The “Clarissimi” book series of the Centre for the History of the University of Padua offers volumes dedicated to the most significant cultural experiences and testimonies of the academic world. Each volume deliberately lacks academic notations and scholarly examples, but rather offers a bibliography for in-depth study that presents itself as a qualified but accessible guide to discover more about the different personalities made famous and admired within the sphere of the University of Padua over the centuries.
