Kicking off the first two meetings of the University of the project “Padua and Space: from robotics and human space exploration to Science and Diplomacy“.
The first meeting, Science Diplomacy. Space, Microelectronics, and Virtual Diplomacy on Tuesday, November 30 takes place from 15:30 to 18:30 in Aula Nievo of Palazzo Bo. While recently developed in the United States, the concept behind the theme of Scientific Diplomacy is not new on an international level. Several countries now include Scientific Attachés in their embassies as members of a diplomatic mission, such as the former University of Le Havre Rector Pierre-Bruno Ruffini. Ruffini joins us in talks with Alessandro Paccagnella, Professor of Electronics at University of Padua Department of Information Engineering (DEI -Microelectronics and Globalization), David Burigana, historian of international relations of the Department of Political, Legal and International Studies and member of CISAS (Scientist Diplomats for Space in Italy: An historical reappraisal?) and Alessia Chiriatti, a fellow of the SPGI working on the organization of an experimental Master in Techno-scientific Diplomacy ( Virtual diplomacy as a new frontier for the international dialogue. Definitions and case studies).
The meeting takes place in-person by reservations only, and online from the Zoom platform.
The second meeting, Dai ghiacci alle stelle. La diplomazia scientifica al servizio della Terra? (From ice to the stars. Scientific diplomacy at the service of the Earth), takes place on Wednesday, December 1 in Aula Nievo of Palazzo Bo. Topics covered concern the innovations of science and technology in the field of international relations. The meeting opens with greetings from Elena Pariotti, Director of the Department of Political Legal Sciences and International Studies (SPGI) of the University of Padua. Followed by David Burigana, historian of international relations of the SPGI Department and member of CISAS (Techno-scientific and space diplomacy: history and sources. A new series of oral history open to the Historical Archives of the European Union in collaboration with the SPGI Department of the University of Padua), Alessandro Paccagnella, Professor of Electronics at University of Padua Department of Information Engineering (DEI -Microelectronics and Globalization), Alessia Glielmi, Scientific Manager of the Polar Memory Project (National Research Council – University of Rome Tor Vergata – Department of History, Cultural Heritage, Education and Society), Gherardo Bonini, Vice-Director, Historical Archives of the European Union, Florence (The external relations of the European Space Agency with a particular look at Italy and China ), Olga Dubrovina University of Padua – H2020 InsSciDE (The European Space Agency and Russia: the first collaborative steps of the 1990s), Alessia Chiriatti University of Padua – ExPoSTID FISR 2020 Project (Virtual diplomacy as a new frontier of international dialogue.
