Rector Daniela Mapelli welcomes all first-year students and incoming students for a special welcome to the University of Padua.

Guest of the event is the Mayor of Padua, Sergio Giordani, along with Unipd researchers and students who will share their stories. Host for the event is the writer, essayist and science communicator Federico Taddia.

The event is also being live streamed on the University of Padua’s YouTube channel.

Participation is reserved to freshers and incoming students, by invitation only (by email).

A special guest’s surprise appearance will end the afternoon and give a taste of The Academy Night. Freshers & Students Welcome Concert, the exclusive event for Unipd freshers and students taking place later in the evening.

Behnaz Jahed
Behnaz Jahed is from Herat, Afghanistan, and she is a Unipd student enrolled in the master course in Human rights and multi-level governance. She earned a bachelor’s degree in law and political science from Herat University, and worked for more than 5 years for women’s rights, human rights, children’s rights, and working on reducing violence against women in different organizations. Because of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, Behnaz Jahed had to move from Afghanistan to Italy because the Taliban threatened her with a call to kill her. She was in a camp as a refugee when she got the admission letter and a scholarship from Padova University.

Mariagrazia Ranzini
Mariagrazia Ranzini is a MSCA Fellow and a researcher at the Department of General Psychology at Unipd. After a career break, she came back to research thanks to a MSCA Individual Fellowship – Career Restart Panel. Mariagrazia works on numerical cognition in relation to other aspects of human cognition, such as spatial attention, working memory, hand action, and synaesthesia. Her research is interdisciplinary, and her personal research network includes psychologists, neurologists, physicists, engineers, philosophers.

Marco Malvestio
Marco Malvestio is EU Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Padua and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His project “EcoSF – The Ecology of Italian Science Fiction” explores the presence of ecological issues in Italian science fiction. He holds a PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Padua, and was previously a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Italian Studies at the University of Toronto. In 2021, he published The Conflict Revisited: The Second World War in Post-Postmodern Fiction (Peter Lang), based on his doctoral thesis, as well as Raccontare la fine del mondo: Fantascienza e Antropocene (nottetempo).

The welcome concert takes place at 7pm at Parco della Musica where you will have the chance to experience top Italian artists live. The concert headliners are Indie pop sextet Pinguini Tattici Nucleari, whose latest success was this summer’s #1 hit Giovani Wannabe, and rapper and singer-songwriter Madame, whose critically acclaimed debut album topped Italian charts last year. Opening acts will also include bands such as rovere, fantahouse, Ccmqmartina and YTAM.

Registrations will open again on Thursday 29 September at 10 am to allow students who have recently finalised their enrolment to attend the meeting.
