Spaghetti and Levi Civita. The mathematician who saved Einstein is the title of the theatrical performance produced by Teatro Boxer and the Department of Mathematics ”Tullio Levi-Civita” of the University of Padua, dedicated to the Paduan mathematician Tullio Levi Civita who contributed to Einstein’s theory.

A theatrical portrait that tells the story of the man and the work of Tullio Levi-Civita. The mathematician was born into a Jewish family in Padua and later expelled from all forms of Italian cultural life by the Fascist Regime. His collaborative work with his teacher Gregorio Ricci-Curbastro formulated the absolute differential calculus. Initially, the academic community did not understand this new mathematical theory.  His work was later applied as the basis of the mathematical structure of Einstein’s general theory of relativity.

Written by Andrea Pennacchi and Marco Gnaccolini with scientific supervision by Davide Barilari and Paola Mannucci, the performance includes music by Giorgio Gobbo and Francesca Sartore on stage.

The show is open to the public; registration is required.

On May 23, the first theatrical performance is open only for the lecturers of the conference for the 100 years of the Italian Mathematical Union hosted in Padua from May 23 to 27 and for the staff of the Department of Mathematics.
