In its eight centuries of history, the University of Padua has always been a place for discussion, exchange, and reflection. As a place open to the contribution of scholars from all over the world who circulated ideas and thought, renewing such a mission with the Lessons about Europe series of conversations hosted on Sundays at Padua’s Teatro Verdi. Each meeting offers a highly topical theme on how the future of the European continent is being written.

The next meeting, Ukraine and Russia in Contemporary Europe, welcomes two leading experts in the area of post-Soviet history Andrea Graziosi and Niccolò Pianciola on Sunday 4 December. Graziosi has been studying the Soviet Century transformation for more than forty years through the lens of Ukraine and Russia history.  Pianciola is a University of Padua Professor of Russian and Central Asian History.

The meeting aims to shed light on the central role of Ukraine in relation to the history of the Soviet Union, Russian history and that of Europe. The historians bring a depth in the understanding of the conflict by highlighting historical reasoning behind issues that have been central to Europe in the 20th century. The meeting aims to take a historical view between wars and revolutions. The historian exam the collapse and the construction of states by focusing on those which were based on nationalist and socialist ideologies.  The meeting brings forth questions of language as an identifying mark of nationality and of imperial self-representations, while discussing the transitions from agrarian societies to “modernity” as a medium that defines demographics and economic stagnation and decline of statehood.

European Lessons is a series of meetings organized in celebration of the 800th anniversary of the University of Padua presented for the public to enjoy in dialogue with university educators. The series is organized in collaboration with the Teatro Stabile del Veneto – National Theater.

Admission to events is free; booking is available on the web site of the Teatro Verdi. Access without reservation from 10 minutes before the show, subject to availability.
