On June 11, the University of Padua officially inaugurates the 800th academic year at the correctional facility of Padua (Casa di reclusione di Padova).

Following the official ceremony that took place in the Aula Magna of Palazzo Bo on Thursday, May 19, 2022, the University inaugurates the opening of the new academic year with incarcerated students.

The official ceremony opens with greetings from Claudio Mazzeo (Director of the Casa di Reclusione di Padova), Daniela Mapelli (Rector of the University of Padua), Franco Prina (President of CNUPP – Conferenza Nazionale dei delegati dei rettori per i Poli Universitari Penitenziari), and Maria Milano Franco D’Aragona (Regional Directorate of the Triveneto Penitentiary System).

The ceremony will be attended by Francesca Vianello (Delegate of the University Prison Project), Jeffrey Ian Ross (University of Baltimore), educators and students of the University Prison Project.

Stefano Allievi holds the lecture “Open society, plural society. Jazz as metaphore”; music by Franco Nesti and Sergio Marchesini.

The incarcerated students are part of a project that began in 2003, which allows prisoners and inmates of Triveneto correctional facilities to study and graduate from the University of Padua. There are currently 57 incarcerate students enrolled at the University of Padua, including 2 for Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, 9 for Economics and Political Science, 3 for Law, 6 for Engineering, and 18 for Humanities.

The event is part of the University of Padua’s 800th anniversary schedule of celebrations.
