Presenting the “Italy and Space Diplomacy. A Conference with Ambassador Umberto Vattani” as part of the University of Padua’s 800th Anniversary Celebrations

Who should participate in science diplomacy? Perhaps a new kind of diplomat, possibly a scientist? What roles do science and technology advisors play within national and international decision-making?

Following an institutional greeting, the conference begins with talks by David Burigana (University of Padua, SPGI and CISAS) on the 2020 Special Supplementary Fund for Research Project: ExPost Italian Diplomacy. Experts and Politicians in Science and Technology in Italy for a Preventive Multilateral Diplomacy (FISR 2020 ExPoSTID): Il rapporto fra scienza e diplomazia al centro di un master sperimentale in Science Diplomacy) and Ambassador Umberto Vattani on the Diplomacy for Science (La Diplomazia per la Scienza). Ambassador Vattani is the only official in the history of Italy to have twice held the position of Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the highest point of Italian diplomacy.

Followed by a discussion between Alessandro Paccagnella (University of Padua Department of Information Engineering and Professor of Microelectronics and Globalization), Polar Memory Scientific Project Manager Alessia Glielmi (Italian National Research Council and Department of History, Culture and Society at the Tor Vergata University of Rome), Marilena Gala (University of Rome Tre), and Mauro Elli (University of Milan).

The conference follows theTechno-Science and Space Diplomacy. The new series derives from the Historical Archives of the European Union in Florence according to an agreement between the Department of Political Sciences, Law and International Studies of the University of Padua.
